Feeling more refreshed after the hot drinks, they trekked back around to the waiting area and waited there patiently for over an hour before anyone came to talk to them.
âMr. Williams?â asked a man in a white coat.
âYesâ¦â Louiseâs dad said, standing up.
âOkâ¦your mother is in a stable condition. She has suffered a minor stroke, but she is stable, asleep now and resting,â the doctor said.
âWill there be any permanent damage?â
âThatâs unclear yet, even from the scans we cannot say how bad the damage isâ¦we will know more with timeâ¦â the doctor said, Louise started to cry.
âI would suggest that you all go home and get some sleep and come back in the morning, there is nothing here that you can do tonight,â the doctor said.
Louise wiped the tears from her eyes.
âCan we see her?â sniffed Louise.
âWell⦠I suppose I could let two of you in⦠but five minutes only⦠and she is asleep so you wonât be able to talk with herâ¦â the doctor instructed.
Louise stood up; she had already picked herself as one of the visitors. Technically it should have been her dad and her uncle to go in but her dad knew how close they were and how stubborn Louise would be about it.
âCome on Louise,â her dad said and they followed the doctor.
The hospital was very quiet at that time of night, especially in the dorms as most of the patients were sleeping. The doctor led them into a room with four patients, of which one was her Nan. She was laid there sleeping peacefully and had a few monitors and machines connected to her with a drip going into her arm. Louise thought that her Nan looked frail and worn. She sat down on the chair beside the bed and picked up her Nanâs hand and kissed it.
âShe will be ok wonât she?â whispered Louise.
âI donât know Louise, I hope so.â
They watched over her for their five minutes of allowed time and then the doctor returned to escort them out.
Louise felt all alone in the back seat of the car on the way home from the hospital, even after they collected her sisters. She was less worried after seeing her Nan but even though the doctor had said that things were stable, she couldnât help not thinking the worst, and about what she would do if her Nan didnât get better.
Louise used to go up to stay at her Nanâs all the time but it had been ages since she had stayed there overnight, perhaps even more than a year. She felt guilty and wished that she had spent more time with her. Then she had to remind herself that her Nan was still ok and very much alive and that she would have plenty more chances to go stay with her in Kildare. Her thoughts were building up and rushing around in her head so fast that she started to think that her own head was going to explode.
